Google Reveals Smart Contact Lens

One might think at first that Google has worked on a miniaturised version of the concept of Google Glass. But no, it is not a question of entertainment. In fact, California firm tackles health with the "Smart Contact Lens". The contact lens is provided with a sensor capable of measuring the concentration of glucose in the blood from a single small tear. And it's able to do so once per second.

This "simple" check turns out to be essential for people with diabetes (one of 19 worldwide) and this new method could change their lives. Pricking the end of the finger to get a drop of blood, until now, is the only way to measure blood glucose. The consequences of a lack of monitoring can be serious, involving damage to the eyes or the heart.

If this is at the moment just a prototype, the team behind this project seems determined to take it as far as possible since discussions are underway with the U.S. administration of drugs. Do not expect much to happen too fast to see this technology, as the project could be further improved by then. One possibility is the integration of a display directly into the lens, so that the information is visible in real time.
