Firefox OS: The 1st Public Smartphones Alcatel and ZTE

While the first phones in FirefoxOS dedicated to developers are available since April, Mozilla announced Monday that consumer smartphones will soon be launched by Alcatel and ZTE, and will be sold by Deutsche Telekom (first in Poland) and Telefónica (Spain).

The first two phones under Firefox OS marketed will be ZTE Open and Alcatel One Touch Fire, presented in February. Other manufacturers such as LG, Huawei or even Sony would relese the Firefox OS smartphones in the coming months.

Mozilla forces the operating system to be free and open source and rely exclusively (or almost) on open technologies. All phone features are managed by web API, and applications installed and distributed on the Firefox Marketplace are written in HTML5 and javascript.

"The launch of Firefox OS is a big event for the Web. It marks the arrival of the first smartphones based exclusively on Web technologies, and the probable beginning of a new wave of Internet innovation" said Jay Sullivan , COO at Mozilla.

Deutsche Telekom assures, "This will build on open platforms reflects our desire for greater freedom of choice for consumers." For its part, Telefónica believes "that smartphones should be more open and the Web is the key platform to make this possible." "Consumers should not be restricted to a single system. Instead, they should have the choice to use the content they want and the flexibility to take it with them when they change their device," added the Spanish operator.
